A devastating early morning fire has razed significant portions of the Singer Market in Kano, one of the largest and most critical commodity hubs in Northern Nigeria. The inferno, which reportedly began in the early hours of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, swept through several blocks of shops housing essential commodities, including food items, household goods, and industrial raw materials. While the exact cause of the outbreak has not yet been officially determined by fire investigators, witnesses reported that the flames spread rapidly across the densely packed stalls before the arrival of emergency responders.

The Kano State Fire Service eventually contained the blaze, but officials and traders have confirmed that “goods worth billions of naira were reportedly destroyed” in the incident. First responders faced significant challenges navigating the narrow access roads within the market, which hampered early efforts to douse the flames. Distraught traders who arrived at the scene found their investments reduced to ash, with some describing the disaster as a massive blow to the regional supply chain. Local authorities have cordoned off the affected areas to prevent looting and to allow safety officers to conduct a preliminary assessment of the structural damage.

Market leadership and state security agencies have launched an investigation to identify the source of the fire and to quantify the total economic impact on the business community. This latest disaster has reignited discussions regarding market safety protocols and the urgent need for modernized fire-fighting infrastructure within major trading centers. While no fatalities have been officially confirmed as of Tuesday morning, the state government is expected to issue a formal statement regarding potential relief measures for the affected merchants whose livelihoods have been disrupted by the “colossal loss” of inventory and property.
