<span;><span;>Segun Obayendo, President of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIoTA), commended the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on Wednesday for its efficient transit system, stating that Lagos possesses Nigeria’s most advanced transportation infrastructure among the 36 states.
<span;>Speaking at the LASU-NACOLM Transport and Logistics Conference and Induction at Lagos State University, Ojo, Obayendo asserted, “I have been to 36 states of Nigeria. Lagos State transportation is better than many other states. Of all the states, Lagos is leading with what is in Lagos in terms of structure, policy. In other states, there are no actions, and I see helplessness.”
<span;>The conference was themed “Safety and Security in the Transportation Sector: The Way Forward.”
<span;>Obayendo highlighted Lagos’s modernization of its transportation system, which he believes distinguishes it from other Nigerian states. He acknowledged LAMATA’s ongoing efforts, stating, “I appreciate what LAMATA is doing. Most people don’t know what they are doing because the results haven’t started crystallising. LAMATA has started in the last five years to transition from Korope to BRT buses.” He added, “In relation to what other states are doing, Lagos State is trying. They made the decision that they want to be the leader and stay on top, and they want to continue to lead.”
<span;>The CIoTA President also noted the institution’s advocacy for nationwide transportation reforms. “We have been at the forefront of advocating for national transport policy. As far as we are concerned in Nigeria, we have never had a national transport policy that states clearly this is what we want to be in the coming years. But courtesy of the present administration, the bill has just been passed,” Obayendo confirmed.
<span;>Rasheed Ayelabegan, the Registrar of CIoTA, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the critical role of security and safety in transportation and all aspects of life. Taiwo Salaam, chairman of the CIoTA Lagos Chapter, explained that the program’s objective was to provide safety tips.
