President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday tasked the Nigeria Revenue Service to embody trust, ensure fairness, and demonstrate that government can be accountable and responsive in its operations, as he inaugurated the agency’s new headquarters in Abuja.
In his keynote address at the ceremony held at the NRS headquarters in Abuja, the President said the Service must earn the confidence of Nigerians at home and respect abroad through transparent and equitable revenue administration.
“You must embody trust and ensure fairness and demonstrate that government can be accountable, responsive and earn confidence at home and respect abroad,” Tinubu said.
The Nigeria Revenue Service, formerly known as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), was established following the passage of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 as part of the Tinubu administration’s broader fiscal policy and tax reform agenda.
The reforms, which sparked intense debate in the National Assembly before their passage, expanded the agency’s mandate beyond tax collection to encompass the coordination of non-tax revenue, service delivery, governance architecture, and compliance.
According to the NRS chief, Zacch Adedeji, the new headquarters — a modern three-tower complex designed to accommodate over 3,000 personnel — is part of the operational infrastructure required to modernise fiscal administration in Nigeria.
The agency operates with over 18,000 personnel globally and is responsible for revenue legislation and implementation.
The inauguration featured goodwill messages from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, who was represented by the Minister of State, Taiwo Oyedele, as well as the Managing Director of CCECC Nigeria, Guan Shuai.
The event also included a documentary titled “The Journey to NRS,” which chronicled the transformation from the old revenue agency structure to the new institution.
NRS Executive Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, who delivered the welcome address, described the commissioning as a milestone in ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s revenue administration, expand the tax base, and improve service delivery.
