A group identifying itself as Ebira witches has issued a September deadline to the Kogi State Government to address a set of unspecified grievances, warning of consequences if their demands are not met, in a development that has stirred widespread reactions across the state and beyond.
The group’s message reportedly surfaced through local channels and community intermediaries, claiming that persistent neglect, insecurity, and socio-economic hardship in Ebira land had compelled them to take the unusual step of issuing a formal ultimatum. While the authenticity and representativeness of the group remain unclear, the announcement has generated concern among residents and authorities.
According to reports, the group alleged that government interventions in infrastructure, employment opportunities, and security have been inadequate, leaving many communities vulnerable. They warned that failure to respond before the stated deadline in September could result in unspecified actions intended to draw attention to their plight.
“We have watched for too long as our people suffer without meaningful intervention,” the statement attributed to the group said. “If our concerns are not addressed by September, we will take steps to make our voices heard.”
Local leaders and community stakeholders have urged calm, emphasizing that grievances should be expressed through lawful and constructive channels. Some traditional figures reportedly distanced themselves from the group’s claims, stating that they do not recognize any formal organization operating under such a description.
Security agencies are said to be monitoring the situation to prevent panic or exploitation by criminal elements. Officials noted that threats—whether symbolic or literal—are treated seriously, particularly when they could disrupt public order.
A government source indicated that authorities remain committed to addressing developmental challenges across all parts of the state but cautioned against actions capable of inciting fear among citizens. “Government is open to dialogue with legitimate community representatives,” the source said. “However, threats of any kind are not the appropriate means of engagement.”
Residents in affected areas expressed mixed reactions, with some dismissing the ultimatum as symbolic protest while others called for the government to engage communities more actively to prevent tensions from escalating.
As of the time of filing this report, no official public statement had been issued by the state government directly responding to the reported deadline, while observers continue to call for clarity, dialogue, and reassurance to maintain public confidence and stability.
