The Federal Government has declared today Friday, May 1, a public holiday in commemoration of International Workers’ Day, a global event set aside to recognize the contributions of workers to national development.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who praised Nigerian workers for their dedication, resilience, and role in sustaining the country’s economy despite prevailing challenges.
In a statement, the minister described workers as the backbone of the nation, noting that their efforts remain critical to Nigeria’s growth and stability across all sectors. He urged both public and private sector employees to remain committed to excellence and productivity.
Tunji-Ojo also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, ensuring better working conditions, and implementing policies aimed at enhancing job creation and economic opportunities.
He encouraged citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the importance of hard work, unity, and patriotism, while continuing to contribute positively to national progress.
International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, is celebrated annually on May 1 in many countries around the world to honour the achievements and rights of workers.
