Indian PM sends condolences saying Buhari believes in stronger India-Nigeria relations

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has conveyed his deep sadness over the demise of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a condolence message posted on his X handle, Modi described Buhari as a statesman whose legacy of diplomacy and commitment to bilateral cooperation will be remembered for years to come.

Modi fondly recalled his meetings and conversations with Buhari, highlighting the late leader’s wisdom, warmth, and unwavering support for stronger India-Nigeria relations. “Deeply saddened by the passing of former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. I fondly recall our meetings and conversations on various occasions. His wisdom, warmth, and unwavering commitment to India-Nigeria friendship stood out,” Modi said.

The Indian leader extended his heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the people, and the government of Nigeria, saying, “I join the 1.4 billion people of India in extending our heartfelt condolences to his family, the people, and the government of Nigeria.”

Buhari passed away in London at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy as a military ruler and democratically elected president of Nigeria.

He served as the country’s military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and later as president from 2015 to 2023.

His remains are set to be laid to rest in Daura on Monday, according to Islamic rites.
