Lagos distributes 2,000 food packs to indigent residents as palliatives

Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen during the presentation of food packs to beneficiaries.

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday distributed 2,000 food packs as palliatives to indigent residents of the State to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.

The food packs were distributed to the beneficiaries by the Lagos State Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement.

Each pack contains 10kg bag of rice, 5kg bag of beans and 5kg bag of garri.

The Special Adviser, Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, said the purpose of the event was to distribute food packs as palliatives to indigent Lagosians.

He said the governor was mindful of the plight of the people occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy, which he said, informed the distribution of the palliatives.

Tajudeen disclosed that the government has about 2,000 food packs to distribute to residents of the state.

He emphasized that one food pack box is for an indigent household, saying that such a person would be given after he or she has registered and presented his or her LASRRA identity card.

In his words: “The purpose why people are here today is for the distribution of palliatives, to indigent Lagosians, those that are vulnerable, the old women and men, and those that need government’s support.

“We have organised to distribute about 2,000 palliative food packs from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, he is so passionate about the plight of the people of Lagos State, hence the need to give them these palliatives as succour to the needs of households.

“This is meant for a household and once you are given, you cannot come back again to collect another one. Before you are given you will be given a form to write your name, your address, local government, LASRRA number and your signature.”

Permanent secretary, Lagos State Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Engr Abiola Kosegbe, said the distribution of the palliatives would be on a continuous basis.

She said other ministries and agencies are also engaged in the distribution of palliatives to indigent Lagosians aside from the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement.

According to her, “The palliative distribution will be on a continuous basis. They are supplied by the Ministry of Agriculture and other agencies are also doing the same. We also have the Ministry of Agriculture doing the same and other agencies of government are doing the same, probably, it will get to the local governments as well.”
