Lagos plans to make ready its 68km Green Line Rail Project in one Phase
* Green Line will be fully ready before it opens for commercial operations.
The Lagos State Government has revealed plans to complete the 68-kilometre Green Line rail project in a single phase, marking a departure from the phased implementation approach adopted in earlier metro rail developments.
Stretching from Marina to the Lekki Free Zone, the Green Line is designed to boost public transportation, reduce dependence on private vehicles, and improve mobility across the state.
According to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the entire alignment of the Green Line has now been unveiled.
The State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, confirmed that the government is committed to delivering the full stretch of the project in one go.
Unlike the Blue and Red Lines, which were developed in phases, the Green Line will be completed entirely before it opens for commercial operations. This strategic shift aims to fast-track delivery and maximise impact upon launch.
LAMATA has also detailed the ongoing Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the project. While the full 68km alignment has been disclosed, the specific route details are yet to be made public.
The ESIA and a Resettlement Policy Framework are underway to assess and mitigate potential environmental and community impacts. These efforts are part of the government’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
To execute the project, the Lagos State Government has entered into a partnership with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
As part of preparatory measures, property owners along the proposed corridor have been urged to regularise their building approval documentation to avoid disruptions during the construction phase.
The completion of the Green Line is expected to significantly transform the state’s transport infrastructure, supporting a more efficient, accessible, and livable Lagos for its rapidly growing population.
