Late scentist Onabamiro: Dignitaries – Obasanjo, Amosun, others pay tributes at Ibadan

A former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, alongside the immediate past Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, on Tuesday, joined other dignitaries to pay tribute to the late Professor Sanya Onabamiro at the University of Ibadan, 40 years after the passage of a renowned scientist and policy formulator.
The commemorative ceremony, held at the University of Ibadan, where the management of the institution named its Administrative block, Postgraduate College, after him for his immense contribution to the education sector.
In his tribute, Obasanjo commended the university’s decision to honour the renowned scientist by naming the college after him, describing Onabamiro as “an icon.”
He said, “In our culture, we never forget our source. A river that forgets its source will dry up. Sweet is the memory of the righteous. Onabamiro was diligent and righteous.”
Also, the former Ogun State Governor, Amosun, acknowledged Onabamiro’s significant role in the education policy, particularly in the Western region.
Amosun said, “The academic world recognises his contribution to the sector, especially in the area of research on Guineaworm.”
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Idowu Olayinka, underscored Onabamiro’s groundbreaking contributions.
Olayinka said, “The decision of the management to name the college after him is in recognition of his contribution to the education sector.”
While responding to the various tributes, one of the late professor’s children, Enitan Onabamiro, reflected on her father’s legacy, describing him as a “great family man who was brilliant and committed to excellence.”
She highlighted his advocacy for the Yoruba language, saying, “If that policy can be brought back to life, it will do us well.”
