Nigerian lawyer, Omowumi honoured with Global Citizen Prize

Nigerian gender advocate, lawyer, and founder of the Gender Mobile Initiative, Omowumi Ogunrotimi, has been named one of the winners of the prestigious 2025 Global Citizen Prize.
Ogunrotimi received the prestigious award alongside other notable changemakers, including Valeriia Rachynska from Ukraine, Taily Terena from Brazil, and Lydia Amenyaglo from Ghana.
Global Citizen, a leading international advocacy organisation dedicated to ending extreme poverty, explained that the awards recognise young individuals who are driving impactful actions to combat climate change, address systemic barriers, empower girls, and champion positive change in various forms.
“The award ceremony will take place at a summit in New York City on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. The event will be attended by several world leaders, including United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, alongside dignitaries such as Sarah, Duchess of York; Bill Nye, Science Educator and Global Citizen Ambassador; and José Manuel Barroso, Professor and Chair of the Gavi Board,” the statement noted.
According to the organisers, Ogunrotimi is celebrated for her fearless leadership in Nigeria’s fight against gender-based violence.
“With more than a decade of advocacy, she has been instrumental in the adoption of sexual violence policies in 22 Nigerian states and over 150 universities. Her efforts also led to the passage of the Sexual Harassment Bill in Tertiary Institutions in the Federal House of Representatives.
“As an Ashoka Fellow and award recipient, Ogunrotimi remains steadfast in her commitment to eradicating gender inequality. Her advocacy continues to push for legal reforms and empower communities to demand justice and change, shaping the future of gender advocacy in Nigeria and beyond,” the statement added.
