The Journalism Clinic Celebrates Media Elders, Honours Legacy of Integrity and Service

The Journalism Clinic has held an Appreciation Day to honour Nigeria’s media elders, celebrating their decades of dedication, mentorship and invaluable contributions to the growth of journalism in the country.
The event, which attracted veteran journalists, media practitioners, and communication scholars, was a heartfelt tribute to those whose work has helped shape the nation’s media landscape and uphold the ethics of the profession.
Speaking at the ceremony, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, commended the honourees for their enduring commitment to truth, fairness, and public service. He described the media elders as “mentors and role models whose courage and integrity continue to inspire new generations of journalists.”
Omotoso, himself a seasoned journalist and editor, noted that journalism remains a noble calling rooted in responsibility and service to humanity. He urged younger professionals to emulate the discipline and ethical standards set by the pioneers of Nigerian journalism, stressing that their sacrifices laid the foundation for today’s vibrant media industry.
Also speaking at the event, veteran broadcaster Patrick Oke underscored the power of storytelling in shaping national consciousness.
He called on journalists to prioritize narratives that promote unity, social development, and youth empowerment. “Our stories must not only inform but also inspire and build values that strengthen society,” he said.
Throughout the event, speakers paid glowing tributes to the honourees, many of whom were among Nigeria’s earliest reporters, editors and broadcasters acknowledging their contributions to press freedom, nation-building, and mentoring younger journalists.
Founder of The Journalism Clinic, Taiwo Obe, said the Appreciation Day was conceived to recognise the contributions of veteran journalists whose hard work and selflessness laid the groundwork for today’s media practitioners. He added that the initiative would be sustained annually to promote intergenerational exchange and preserve the ethical foundations of journalism.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of plaques and certificates of recognition to the media elders, as participants pledged to continue promoting professionalism, integrity, and truth in Nigerian journalism.
