Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has announced a major humanitarian initiative to provide free healthcare services to at least 10,000 residents in the suburbs of Lagos State as part of activities commemorating his 89th birthday. In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former leader detailed that the “Lagos Medical Mission” will be executed under the auspices of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation (OOF) between February 27 and March 4, 2026. The outreach is specifically designed to reach underserved populations in the Ikorodu and Alimosho Local Government Areas, offering a range of services including cardiovascular screening, eye care, and the provision of hearing aids to qualified beneficiaries.

Dr. Olalekan Makinde, the Chief Executive Officer of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, described the initiative as a “legacy-driven humanitarian intervention” that mirrors the former President’s career-long focus on public welfare. “This medical mission is a gift to the nation, especially to those who may not otherwise have access to quality healthcare,” Makinde stated, adding that the foundation remains dedicated to transforming lives through strategic interventions in health and community development. The program is scheduled to commence at the Ijede LCDA Council Hall and the Imota Mini Stadium in Ikorodu, before shifting its operations to the Alade Stadium in the Agbado/Oke-Odo area of Alimosho for the final three days of the exercise.

The medical team will provide general consultations, diagnosis, and the distribution of essential medications at no cost to children, the elderly, and vulnerable families. Highlighting the broader vision of the mission, Dr. Makinde noted that “as we celebrate the 89th birthday of His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, we honour his legacy in the most meaningful way possible—by serving the people.” This philanthropic drive follows a tradition of humanitarian work by the OOF, which has previously gained recognition for its extensive hearing aid programs and agricultural empowerment schemes across the country.

Beyond the medical outreach, the former President has also used the lead-up to his anniversary to advocate for institutional reforms, recently calling for the return of the Law programme at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). Obasanjo, who remains a central figure in Nigerian and African diplomacy, continues to maintain an active public profile through his foundation’s work and his regular interventions on national policy. The 89th birthday celebrations are expected to draw further tributes from across the continent, focusing on his contributions to nation-building and his enduring influence on Nigeria’s political landscape.
