INEC announces readiness for 2027 general election schedule despite Electoral Act delay
… says pending the new Electoral Act becomes law, the Commission will continue to operate under the existing legal framework
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is fully prepared for the 2027 general election.
INEC explained that it has already completed the election timetable and schedule of activities, even though the amended Electoral Act has not yet been passed by the National Assembly.
The Commission said it is now waiting for lawmakers to finish work on the proposed changes to the law.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
He said INEC has submitted its recommendations to the National Assembly but noted that the timing of the Electoral Act amendment could affect some parts of the election schedule.
According to him, some activities in the timetable may need to be adjusted depending on when the amended law is finally passed and signed.
Despite this, Amupitan stressed that INEC remains committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible election.
He added that until the new Electoral Act becomes law, the Commission will continue to operate under the existing legal framework.
