Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially confirmed her membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a development that has generated widespread political reactions across the country.
Speaking while confirming the move, Iyabo Obasanjo described the ruling party as her “natural home,” signalling a clear departure from her previous political affiliations and aligning herself with the APC at a time of heightened political realignments.
She said her decision was informed by reflection on her political journey and the direction of national politics, noting that her choice was made consciously and without coercion. According to her, “I have decided to join the APC because I believe it represents my natural political home at this point in my life.”
The confirmation has attracted attention given her family background and the long-standing critical stance of her father, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, toward the APC and successive administrations led by the party. Observers note that her decision underscores the increasing trend of cross-party movements by prominent political figures ahead of future electoral contests.
Party officials and supporters of the APC welcomed the development, describing it as a significant addition to the party’s fold, while reactions from opposition circles ranged from surprise to cautious commentary on its broader political implications.
Iyabo Obasanjo has previously been active in Nigeria’s political space, including serving as a senator during the Fourth Republic, and her latest move is being viewed as a re-entry into frontline partisan politics under a new platform.
As discussions continue, the development is expected to further shape political conversations, particularly regarding elite alignments and internal dynamics within Nigeria’s major political parties.
