Governor Seyi Makinde has officially announced his intention to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, signaling a major development in the country’s emerging political landscape ahead of the next general polls.
The Oyo State governor made the declaration on Thursday during a joint mega rally organized by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The event attracted party supporters, political stakeholders, and allies from different parts of the country.
Makinde, who was first elected governor in 2019 on the PDP platform, is expected to complete his second and final term in 2027. His presidential declaration now places him among the early figures positioning themselves for the next presidential contest.
The announcement also raises questions about the future direction of opposition politics in Nigeria, especially regarding efforts to build a united front against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the election.
In recent months, Makinde has been actively involved in discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation among opposition parties. He recently hosted a summit involving key opposition groups, where participants reportedly agreed on the need to present a joint presidential candidate capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027.
Political observers believe Makinde’s open declaration could reshape ongoing coalition talks within the opposition camp as parties begin early preparations for the next election cycle.
Further details about his campaign plans and political strategy are expected in the coming days.
