Opposition political leaders have raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s democratic balance following a high-level meeting in Ibadan, warning that the country may be drifting toward a one-party state.
The gathering brought together key figures from various opposition parties, who expressed alarm at the growing dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which currently controls 31 out of Nigeria’s 36 states. Speakers at the summit argued that such concentration of power could weaken democratic institutions, reduce political competition, and limit accountability.
Participants emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among opposition parties to provide a credible alternative and safeguard Nigeria’s multiparty system. They called for electoral reforms, internal party strengthening, and strategic alliances ahead of future elections.
The leaders also urged citizens, civil society groups, and the media to remain vigilant in defending democratic principles, stressing that a healthy democracy depends on vibrant opposition and institutional checks and balances.
While the ruling APC has maintained that its electoral success reflects popular support, critics at the summit insisted that the trend raises legitimate concerns about political inclusiveness and the long-term health of Nigeria’s democracy.
