The leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified following a ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria nullifying the party’s National Convention held in Ibadan in late 2025.
The court’s decision is a major setback for the faction aligned with Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, often referred to as the Turaki-led bloc, which had relied on the outcome of the convention to assert its control over party structures.
In the wake of the judgment, the rival camp backed by Nyesom Wike has maintained that the current leadership remains valid, insisting that Samuel Anyanwu continues as National Secretary while Iliya Damagum retains his position as Acting National Chairman.
The ruling has thrown the party into deeper uncertainty, with both factions interpreting the judgment to support their claims. Legal analysts say the decision could trigger fresh litigation and internal negotiations as stakeholders seek clarity on the party’s legitimate leadership.
The PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party, has been grappling with prolonged internal divisions, raising concerns about its cohesion and preparedness ahead of future electoral contests. Observers warn that unless resolved quickly, the crisis could further weaken the party’s ability to challenge the ruling government at both state and national levels.
