Fresh security concerns have emerged in Katsina State after armed bandits reportedly issued a six-day ultimatum to several rural communities, demanding the delivery of 700 cattle and 1,000 sheep or face violent reprisals.
Local sources say the threat has triggered widespread fear among residents, many of whom are already grappling with repeated attacks, kidnappings, and loss of livelihoods. Some families are said to be considering displacement, while community leaders are urgently appealing to security agencies for protection.
The ultimatum highlights the growing trend of economic extortion by armed groups, who increasingly impose levies on vulnerable communities as a means of sustaining their operations.
Meanwhile, in Plateau State, security forces have recorded a major operational success. Troops conducting clearance operations reportedly neutralized 10 suspected terrorists during a recent engagement in troubled areas of the state.
Military sources indicate that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to stabilize flashpoints and dismantle armed networks responsible for recurring violence. Weapons and other materials were also reportedly recovered during the raid.
Security analysts say the contrasting developments underscore the complex and uneven nature of Nigeria’s security landscape—with some regions facing escalating threats while others record tactical gains.
Residents in both states continue to call for sustained military presence, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger community protection measures to prevent further attacks and restore confidence in affected areas.
