Tension and public outrage have intensified across Nigeria following reports that the insurgent group Boko Haram has issued a 72-hour ultimatum demanding a ransom of ₦5 billion for the release of more than 400 women and children abducted in Borno State.
According to local sources and security analysts, the victims were taken during coordinated attacks on vulnerable communities in northern Borno, an area that has long faced repeated assaults from insurgent groups. The scale of the abduction has raised fresh concerns about the safety of rural populations and the effectiveness of ongoing counterinsurgency operations.
Families of the victims have been thrown into distress, with many appealing to the federal government for urgent intervention. Community leaders and civil society organizations have also condemned the situation, describing the ransom demand as both alarming and inhumane.
The Nigerian government has yet to officially confirm the ultimatum but has reiterated its longstanding position of not negotiating with terrorist groups. Security agencies are reportedly intensifying search-and-rescue efforts, while military operations in the region have been heightened to track down the perpetrators and secure the safe return of those abducted.
This latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, despite years of military campaigns against insurgency. Analysts warn that without stronger intelligence coordination, community protection strategies, and sustained humanitarian support, such crises may continue to recur.
More updates are expected as the situation develops.
