Nigerian-American driver Ugo Ugochukwu has secured the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy, marking a significant career milestone just three months after concluding his tenure with the McLaren Formula 1 development program. The 18-year-old athlete finalized the championship victory by maintaining a 15-point lead over Audi F1 junior Freddie Slater, following a 15-race season in which Ugochukwu recorded four individual wins.
Throughout the campaign, Ugochukwu demonstrated notable consistency, achieving podium finishes at every round and falling outside the top 10 on only two occasions. Speaking after the New Zealand Grand Prix, Ugochukwu described the experience as an “amazing feeling honestly to cross the line,” noting that “the race felt way longer than usual, just happy to get it done, to get it over with, and get the championship.”
The driver credited his technical support team for the successful season, stating, “It’s been a really good campaign, really good season. I can’t thank the whole team enough. They did a mega job all year and I’m happier for them than even for me.”
The championship victory was nearly compromised during the season finale due to a technical setback. A left-front suspension failure during the qualifying session resulted in a technical breach, which subsequently relegated Ugochukwu to 13th place on the starting grid. However, he managed to recover sufficient positions during the race to secure the points necessary for the title. “It hasn’t been easy,” Ugochukwu remarked regarding the incident. “I had to put it behind me and look at the bigger picture and get the championship, and that’s what we did.”
Following this achievement, Ugochukwu is scheduled to transition to his second season in the FIA Formula 3 championship. He will compete with Campos Racing, with the season opener set to take place at the Australian Grand Prix from March 6–8.
