Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has said the reason behind turning down Galatasaray’s iconic No. 9 shirt, choosing instead to retain his familiar No. 45 jersey ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The Nigeria international, who completed a permanent move to the Turkish champions last summer after a successful loan spell, has quickly established himself as one of the club’s most influential players.

His impressive performances had fuelled speculation that he would inherit the famous No. 9 shirt, previously worn by Mauro Icardi. However, Osimhen has continued to wear the No. 45 jersey throughout Galatasaray’s pre-season preparations.

Explaining his decision, the 27-year-old said the number had brought him good fortune since arriving at the Istanbul club.

“I believe that you will sell more shirts, but I believe you will understand my perspective. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray,” Osimhen told Sabah.

“I wish to continue with the same number,” he added, ruling out a switch to the club’s iconic No. 9 shirt.

Osimhen has become a firm fans’ favourite since joining Galatasaray permanently from Napoli, following an outstanding loan campaign that helped the Yellow-Reds to domestic success.

The prolific forward recently opened his pre-season scoring account in Galatasaray’s entertaining 3-3 draw with Rennes in Istanbul and will be hoping to carry that form into the new campaign as the Turkish champions prepare to defend their league title.

With expectations high once again, Osimhen is set to spearhead Galatasaray’s attack as they target further domestic success and a strong run in European competition.
