South Africa have crushed Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after beating the Super Falcons 2-1 in a tense play-off clash in Casablanca on Thursday.
The lost implies Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time in the history of the competition, bringing an abrupt end to the Super Falcons’ long-standing record of appearing at every edition.
While both teams suffered quarter-final exits at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the encounter was effectively a winner-takes-all battle for Africa’s remaining route into the intercontinental World Cup play-offs.
South Africa seized the opportunity, producing the more threatening attacking display and eventually breaking the deadlock through Thembi Kgatlana in the 56th minute.
The Banyana Banyana doubled their advantage in the 77th minute when Refiloe Jane found the net, putting South Africa firmly in control.
Nigeria responded late, with Christy Ucheibe pulling one back in stoppage time, but the Super Falcons could not complete a dramatic comeback.
The statistics reflected South Africa’s greater attacking threat. Nigeria enjoyed 55 per cent possession and completed more passes, but South Africa created six big chances compared with Nigeria’s two and registered 17 shots to the Falcons’ 12.
South Africa also recorded seven corners to Nigeria’s two and had 12 touches in the opposition box, compared with Nigeria’s seven, underlining the greater penetration of the Banyana Banyana attack.
Despite Nigeria producing six shots on target, South Africa’s ability to create clearer opportunities proved decisive. The Banyana Banyana registered an expected-goals figure of 2.51, more than twice Nigeria’s 1.12.
The result represents a major setback for one of Africa’s most decorated women’s football nations. Nigeria had never previously failed to qualify for a FIFA Women’s World Cup, making the defeat a landmark moment for the Super Falcons.
For South Africa, however, the victory keeps their World Cup dream alive. Banyana Banyana now advance to the six-team intercontinental play-off preliminary round, where they will compete for one of three remaining places at the 2027 tournament in Brazil.
