PHUKET — Former two-time heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury has identified British contender Fabio Wardley as a potential opponent should a long-anticipated clash with Anthony Joshua fail to materialize.
Despite announcing his retirement in January 2025 following consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk, the 37-year-old “Gypsy King” has signaled an imminent return to professional boxing. Fury is currently training in Thailand, where he has been documenting his preparations for a 2026 comeback.
In a recent social media post, Fury confirmed his intention to fight again this year. “2026 is that year Return of the Mac. Been away for a while but im back now, 37 years old and still punching,” he wrote. “Nothing better to do than punch men in the face and get paid for it.”
The veteran heavyweight has reportedly been sparring and training alongside Kevin Lerena, the current WBC bridgerweight titleholder. In a video update shared with his followers, Fury expressed confidence in his physical condition.
“Run done today, feeling good,” Fury stated. “Feeling sharper, faster, more ready than I was last week. Second week of training, come on. Bring it on, let’s go.”
While a domestic showdown with Anthony Joshua remains a high-priority fixture for boxing fans, Fury’s camp is reportedly considering Wardley as a viable alternative to ensure the former champion returns to the ring in 2026 regardless of Joshua’s availability or retirement status.
