Group advocates policy framework in support of orphans welfare
Association of Orphanages and Homes Operators in National, (ASOHON), has advocated for the formulation of a policy framework that makes special considerations for the care of orphans and vulnerable children across the country.
President of the association, Rev. Dr. Gabriel Oyediji said that a policy framework will not only ensure special considerations for orphans but will also ensure that as caregivers and protectors of these children, they are able to confront challenges and related issues head-on and work towards finding sustainable solutions.
He made this known at a Two-Day National General Conference of ASOHON members, yesterday in Abuja.
Oyediji observe that “Nigeria, like many other countries, is grappling with a myriad of social issues that have contributed to the increasing number of orphaned and vulnerable children within our society.
“It is our responsibility, as caregivers and protectors of these children, to confront these challenges head-on and work towards finding sustainable solutions.
“I am deeply aware of the challenges that we, as orphanage operators in Nigeria, face on a daily basis. Today, I would like to address in this conference: “Advocating for change: policy and legislative measures in support of orphan’s welfare in Nigeria.”
The President also said pointed that the absence of comprehensive government policies and welfare funds specifically tailored to support stress free operations of orphanages poses another challenge.
“Our association has long advocated for the development of a legal framework that governs the relationship between the Government and operators of orphanages as well in ensuring their accountability, and protecting the rights of the children.
“It is imperative that we continue to work closely with relevant government agencies to address this issue and establish a balance regulatory system that safeguards the well-being of the children as well as the operators.
“One of the foremost challenges we face is the lack of adequate resources and funding. Operating an orphanage requires a significant financial commitment, including the provision of shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, education, and emotional support to the children under our care.
“Unfortunately, the available resources often fall short of meeting these needs, leaving us in a constant struggle to provide the quality care these children deserve,” he said.
The meeting had in attendance ASOHON representatives across Nigeria.
