LAMATA Shows Up with Fare Structure as Lagos Red Line Ready for Full Operations

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has revealed the fare structure for the Lagos Red Line, with full passenger operations scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

The Red Line, a 27-kilometre rail project connecting Oyingbo in Lagos to Agbado in Ogun State, is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and offer commuters a faster and more reliable transportation option between key locations such as Agbado, Ikeja, Oshodi, and Lagos Island.

LAMATA made the fare announcement via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, setting the fare for a complete journey from Oyingbo to Agbado at ₦1,500. Payments will be made exclusively through the Cowry Card, as cash transactions will not be accepted, in line with other regulated public transport systems in Lagos.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will lead the launch event, joined by members of his executive council and other dignitaries. The event will feature a ceremonial ride with commuters on the first fare-paying journey, officially marking the start of regular services on the Red Line.

Regular train services will begin daily at 6:00 am from Agbado, with bus connections available at the Oyingbo terminal for passengers continuing to Lagos Island, ensuring smooth, uninterrupted travel.

    Key Details:

The Red Line is a 37-kilometre rail project, with the first phase covering 27 kilometers from Agbado to Oyingbo. This phase includes eight strategically placed stations: Agbado, Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, Yaba, and Oyingbo.

Construction began on April 15, 2021, with the first phase inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on February 29, 2024.

A six-week trial run was successfully completed from August 28 to September 27, 2024.

The Red Line shares tracks with the Nigerian Railway Corporation’s Lagos-Ibadan route, under a partnership established during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure.

Governor Sanwo-Olu has projected that once the second phase of the Red Line is completed, it will operate 20 trips daily, with the capacity to transport up to 500,000 passengers per day, significantly enhancing Lagos’s public transportation network.

Recently, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) granted Lagos State a six-month temporary license to operate the Red Line, with permanent approval pending further assessments of the system’s full capacity.
