Amb. Dr. Queen Blessing Ebigieson Appointed to Canadian Film Festivals’ Advisory Boards, Marking Major Milestone for Nollywood

The Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (TIFF) and the Brampton International Nollywood Film Festival (BINFF) have announced the appointment of Amb. Dr. Queen Blessing Ebigieson to their advisory boards, in a significant development for African cinema. Dr. Ebigieson, who serves as the National President of the Association of Movie Producers Nigeria (AMP), brings her extensive experience and leadership to these prestigious Canadian film festivals.

The appointment, announced on January 1, 2025, represents a strategic move to strengthen the growing presence of Nollywood—Nigeria’s influential film industry—on the global stage. Under Dr. Ebigieson’s guidance, both festivals have already expanded their categories for Nollywood films, creating unprecedented opportunities for Nigerian filmmakers in the Canadian market.

One of the most notable achievements has been TINFF’s status as a Telefilm Canada Qualifying Festival. This designation opens doors for Nigerian producers to access funding and resources from Telefilm Canada, marking a significant step forward in international collaboration. The festival’s recent inclusion in IMDb has further elevated the visibility of Nollywood productions on a global platform.

TINFF holds a unique position as the only African-tied Canadian Screen Awards Qualifying Festival, offering Nigerian filmmakers the exceptional opportunity to gain recognition at Canada’s most prestigious film awards ceremony. This distinction sets TINFF and BINFF apart as crucial bridges between African cinema and the global film community.

Dr. Ebigieson’s influence has been particularly evident in the success of the TINFF Market Summit through her leadership in the CBDFM Summit. The summit has become a vital networking hub, facilitating meaningful connections between Nollywood professionals and international industry stakeholders.

“Dr. Ebigieson’s appointment marks a transformative moment for both our festivals and the broader Nollywood industry,” said Isioro Jaboro, President, CEO and Chief Creative Officer of TINFF and BINFF. “Her expertise and advocacy will be instrumental in creating new pathways for Nigerian filmmakers to reach global audiences.”

The collaboration is expected to yield significant benefits for both the Nigerian and Canadian film industries. As a seasoned advocate for Nigerian cinema, Dr. Ebigieson’s role on the advisory boards will focus on developing programs that promote cultural exchange and create tangible opportunities for emerging filmmakers.

Looking ahead, TINFF and BINFF are positioned to play an even more crucial role in showcasing Nigerian talent and creativity to international audiences. The festivals continue to serve as primary platforms for cultural dialogue between Nigeria and Canada, while actively working to expand the global footprint of Nollywood productions.

This strategic appointment comes at a time when African cinema is gaining increasing recognition worldwide. Through initiatives like these, TINFF and BINFF are helping to ensure that Nigerian filmmakers have access to the resources, networks, and platforms necessary for success in the global film industry.

For more information about upcoming events and opportunities, filmmakers and industry professionals are encouraged to visit the official websites of TINFF and BINFF.
