Obasa faces impeachment for financial misconduct as Deputy takes seat
Lagos State House of Assembly, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has been impeached on Monday by members of the House over alleged statutory and financial violations. His deputy, Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, has been elevated to the position of Speaker.
The impeachment occurred while Obasa was reportedly in Atlanta, coming shortly after revelations of a N43.5 billion expenditure allegedly approved for backup vehicles for lawmakers, among other controversial financial decisions.
Obasa, 52, who had served as Speaker since June 8, 2015, has faced multiple allegations of financial impropriety throughout his tenure. Previously, he was investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following media reports of alleged mismanagement of public funds, including accusations of diverting state funds to personal businesses and bank accounts. Though questioned by the EFCC in 2020, no formal charges were filed.
