Expect ‘Sopo,’ Fela Kuti’s Musical Legacy in Creele Animation Studios 3D Short Film, Set for Release in May

Creele Animation Studios, an innovative Nigerian startup dedicated to amplifying African narratives on the global stage, is preparing to unveil “Sopo,” a groundbreaking 3D-animated short film scheduled for release in May 2025. The film’s title, which translates to “Connect” in the Yoruba language, offers a profound adaptation of “Dis Fela Sef! The Legend(s) Untold,” a revealing memoir written by Benson Idonije, who served as Fela Kuti’s first band manager and close confidant during the formative years of the Afrobeat movement.

The animated work presents a unique perspective on the legendary Nigerian musician and activist, chronicling the birth of Afrobeat through Idonije’s intimate observations and experiences. This historical narrative promises to explore the cultural revolution sparked by Fela’s innovative musical fusion and political consciousness that eventually resonated worldwide.

Nissi Ogulu, co-founder of Creele Animation Studios, emphasized the film’s significance beyond mere entertainment: “Sopo is not just an animated film; it’s a visually stunning and historically rich chronicle of the birth of a movement; our roots and an exploration of the transformative power of music.” Ogulu further explained that the project meticulously balances artistic expression with historical accuracy to honor Fela’s enduring legacy.

The film’s premiere journey will begin with an exclusive private screening in Lagos this May, followed by an ambitious international festival tour designed to introduce global audiences to this distinctly African narrative. The production team has prioritized authenticity throughout the creative process, reinforcing Creele Animation Studios’ mission to pioneer African storytelling with uncompromising cultural integrity.

“As Sopo prepares to make its debut in Nigeria and internationally, it stands as a testament to the rising power of African animation and storytelling. This short film not only celebrates African heritage but also aims to showcase the continent’s creative brilliance to the world,” Ogulu added, highlighting the project’s dual focus on celebrating music and illuminating the personal dynamics of parenthood, talent development, and musical innovation.

The production boasts impressive creative credentials, with Ogulu directing the Lagos-based production, Afrobeat musician Made Kuti (Fela’s grandson) composing the original score, and award-winning talent manager Bose Ogulu serving as executive producer. This collaborative effort brings together multiple generations connected to Fela’s legacy.

John Etienne, business manager at Creele Animation Studios, contextualized “Sopo” within broader industry developments: “There has never been a better time to take African animation mainstream. Nollywood is a major film market and the third-largest in the world by production volume, behind Hollywood and Bollywood.” He emphasized the wealth of untapped narratives waiting to be shared with international audiences, stating that “incredible stories are waiting to be told, and it would be unfair to keep them hidden.”

The film represents a significant milestone in African animation’s evolution, merging cutting-edge 3D technology with the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria’s most influential musical innovator, promising to introduce Fela’s revolutionary spirit to new generations through an accessible and visually compelling medium.
