Deliver 7% GDP growth yearly – Wale Edun tasks finance directors
The Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Mr Wale Edun, has charged top management staff of the Federal Ministry of Finance to drive reforms that will accelerate Nigeria’s GDP growth to seven per cent per annum in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration.
This was disclosed in a statement on Friday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mohammed Manga, following the opening of the 2025 Ministerial Performance Management Retreat held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Yola, Adamawa State.
The two-day retreat, themed “Strengthening Performance Management for Fiscal Stability,” brought together directors from across the ministry and relevant stakeholders to assess progress and enhance implementation capacity.
Declaring the retreat open, Edun called for “renewed purpose, measurable impact, and sustained economic reform,” urging directors to embrace their role in ensuring Nigeria’s fiscal credibility.
“The expectations of government and Nigerians are higher than ever. You are the engine room of policy execution. The performance of this Ministry is, to a large extent, a reflection of your effectiveness,” Edun was quoted as saying.
He reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty through inclusive growth and emphasised that while the economy has stabilised, the next phase was to accelerate economic expansion to 7 per cent GDP growth annually.
Edun also praised the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, for hosting the retreat, commending “the laudable strides being made under his leadership.”
In a goodwill message delivered on behalf of the governor, the Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, said the state was proud to host the retreat, which aligns with broader fiscal reforms.
“Adamawa remains committed to national development goals. We are honoured to host this retreat, which speaks to the importance of aligning local governance with federal fiscal reforms,” she said.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Lydia Jafiya, stressed the urgency of the retreat’s objectives, pointing to the challenges of limited resources and rising public expectations.
“As we navigate the realities of limited resources, rising public expectations, and the need for efficiency in governance, performance management becomes not only relevant but critical to our fiscal stability and collective success,” she said.
She urged directors to entrench a culture of performance and accountability in line with the Ministry’s mandate to manage the nation’s finances transparently and effectively.
