inDrive launches law enforcement data request platform
inDrive, a global ride-hailing platform operating in nine African markets, has launched a law enforcement request portal in Nigeria, providing a secure channel for authorities to access user data for public safety investigations, the company announced Tuesday.
The online portal, designed to streamline data requests, ensures that only authorised Nigerian law enforcement officials can submit enquiries, supported by legal documents such as warrants or subpoenas. The initiative reflects inDrive’s push to balance public safety with user privacy in one of its fastest-growing markets.
“The launch of this portal reaffirms our dedication to supporting law enforcement agency’s efforts in Nigeria,” the Country Government Relations Manager at inDrive, Mary-Anne Momoh-Ige, said in a statement.
“We understand that timely and secure access to information is essential in safety investigations, and this portal was developed to meet that need while maintaining user privacy and data protection,” she added.
Nigeria, a key hub for inDrive since its 2019 entry in Lagos, has seen the company expand to cities like Abuja and Ibadan. The ride-hailing sector in Lagos faces stringent regulations, including data-sharing agreements and API integrations for real-time data access by authorities, designed to enhance safety and compliance.
These requirements, often established through mutual agreements rather than blanket mandates, reflect the growing scrutiny on ride-hailing firms across Africa.
Momoh-Ige emphasised that requests must comply with Nigerian laws, and any data shared is restricted from third-party disclosure. The move comes as ride-hailing firms face increasing scrutiny over safety and regulatory compliance across Africa.
With Nigeria as a key hub, inDrive’s portal aims to strengthen ties with local law enforcement, enhancing its operational framework while maintaining trust among its millions of users in the region.
