Uber has introduced a new hotel booking feature within its app as part of its strategy to evolve into a comprehensive “everything app.” The service, developed in partnership with Expedia, allows users to search and reserve hotel rooms from a selection of more than 700,000 properties. The feature integrates travel tools such as maps, filters, and pricing options, while enabling payments through saved card details already stored in the Uber platform. According to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the company is expanding beyond ride-hailing and food delivery to become a unified platform for a wide range of everyday services. Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said the collaboration is aimed at simplifying travel planning and reducing the steps required to complete bookings. Uber also plans to extend the partnership to include short-term rental listings through Vrbo in the future. The move reflects a broader global trend toward multifunctional apps that combine services like transport, shopping, and payments in a single ecosystem, similar to platforms such as WeChat and Alipay in China. Other tech companies are also pursuing similar “super app” models, including Airbnb, which has added experiences and personal services, and X, which is exploring financial services integration. Uber further revealed plans to incorporate AI-powered tools, including meal planning, shopping list creation, delivery coordination, and a voice assistant for navigating the app.

….. Empowering Over 45 Nigerians with Business Tools and Launching New ICT Centre

In a remarkable show of generosity and community commitment, Femi Balogun, Founder and Managing Director of Kerojet Services Limited, commemorated his birthday with a large-scale empowerment initiative aimed at uplifting vulnerable members of the Ipaja community.

Demonstrating his deep-rooted dedication to Corporate Social Responsibility and social impact, Balogun empowered over 45 individuals by distributing essential business tools, ranging from hair dryers and tailoring equipment to barbing kits and point-of-sale (POS) machines. This initiative is part of his ongoing “7-7 Project,” a legacy campaign aligned with his birthday, designed to foster sustainable economic empowerment across Nigeria.

Lawal Abdul-Wahab, Project Engineer, Kerojet Services Ltd; Tajudeen Olasupo, National Youth Amir, NASFAT; Mr. Femi Balogun, Managing Director/CEO, Kerojet Services Ltd; and Mr. Yemi Solade, Veteran Nollywood Actor, at the Femi Balogun birthday-driven CSR empowerment and the ground-breaking/foundation laying ceremony of the NASFAT Youth Information Technology Centre, Ipaja Branch, held in Lagos.

Among those empowered, Adetunji Olabisi, who received a POS machine, expressed deep gratitude: “This isn’t just a tool, it’s my ticket to financial independence. Femi Balogun’s generosity has opened doors I thought were closed forever.”

Oyindamola Tinuola, a fashion designer equipped with new tailoring tools, shared her excitement: “With this support, I can finally take my business to the next level and provide for my family. It’s more than empowerment—it’s a lifeline.”

Tajudeen Olasupo, National Youth Amir, NASFAT, praised the initiative’s inclusive spirit: “Femi Balogun’s commitment goes beyond charity. He’s planting seeds for lasting growth in our community, making sure no one is left behind.”

Speaking at the event, Balogun emphasized the importance of giving back, especially during challenging economic times. “This is not just a one-time event. I envision this project continuing long after I’m gone. Those of us who have been fortunate must uplift those facing hardship, particularly when jobs are scarce,” he said.

Balogun’s philanthropic journey began in earnest with the launch of The Pillars Dream Living Foundation during his 40th birthday, an organization dedicated to community development through empowerment programs, educational support, and infrastructure projects. The foundation has since transformed lives across multiple states, including Kano and Lagos, through initiatives such as borehole installations, school fee sponsorships, and small business support.

In 2024 alone, Balogun’s foundation empowered 25 families with grinding machines, and this year’s efforts have significantly expanded in scale and scope.

A laudable moment of the celebration was the foundation-laying ceremony for a new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre at NASFAT Ipaja. Balogun pledged full funding for constructing a dedicated facility to revitalize the community’s ICT resources, reviving a vision he first championed as chairman of the National Youth Day Committee for the community.

Acknowledging the careful selection process, Balogun explained that a committee ensured beneficiaries were chosen based on need, without bias toward religion or ethnicity. “Our empowerment transcends all divides. Christians, Muslims, and those of no faith have all benefited equally,” he noted.

Reflecting on his philanthropic impact over the years, Balogun shared that the number of people helped is too many to count, highlighting initiatives like feeding hundreds during Ramadan as part of his ongoing commitment to social good.

More than a birthday celebration, Femi Balogun’s initiative serves as a powerful reminder of how individual acts of kindness and strategic philanthropy can bring lasting hope and opportunity to communities facing economic hardship.
