Super Falcons expressed concern for Salgado of South-Africa by visiting in hospital
The Nigerian Super Falcons have extended their love and wishes for a swift recovery to South African Banyana Banyana midfielder Gabriela Salgado, who sustained a serious injury during Tuesday’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final match.
The incident, which saw Salgado stretchered off the pitch, cast a shadow over Nigeria’s hard-fought 2-1 victory.
Super Falcons, on their official X page on Wednesday, emphasised that the spirit of competition takes a backseat in moments of such distress.
A portion of the statement read, “The entire Super Falcons of Nigeria family, from players and coaches to staff, were profoundly saddened to learn of the serious injury sustained by Gabriela Salgado during yesterday’s match.
“Our immediate thoughts are solely with her for comfort, care, and the recovery journey ahead.”
Salgado’s injury occurred late in the second half of the semi-final clash, a moment that visibly impacted players from both sides.
Early reports indicate she suffered a fractured mid-shaft in her left leg and underwent successful surgery on Wednesday.
She is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the year.
The Super Falcons’ gesture of solidarity has been widely commended across the African football community.
Beyond the initial statement, players from the Nigerian squad reportedly visited Salgado in the hospital, further reinforcing their message of support and care for a fellow athlete.
As the Super Falcons prepare for the WAFCON final against hosts Morocco, their collective focus, alongside their competitive drive, remains firmly on the wellbeing of Gabriela Salgado.
The Super Falcons wishes Salgado a steady healing process and a strong return to the pitch when she is fully ready.
“Our collective wish is for Gabriela’s steady healing, renewed strength, and a return to the pitch when she is ready, surrounded by the unwavering support of the team and community”, the statement concluded.
