Opay Digital Services Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Lagos State University to sponsor 20 students with scholarships worth ₦60 million over the next 10 years.

This was contained in a statement shared on the school’s official WhatsApp channel on Wednesday.

The initiative, facilitated under the auspices of the LASU-SDG in collaboration with the Lagos State University Directorate of Advancement, was formalised at a signing ceremony held on Monday at the university’s Senate Chamber, Ojo campus.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, commended Opay for the gesture, describing it as a boost to the university’s efforts to promote academic excellence and support indigent students.

The statement read, “‎The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM, in her welcome address, appreciated the Opay team for bringing such an opportunity to LASU. She further provided an overview of the scholarship initiative, emphasising its significance in supporting twenty (20) deserving students.

“She described the programme as a gesture of goodwill and corporate social responsibility by Opay Digital Services Limited, aimed at fostering academic excellence and alleviating the financial challenges faced by students.”

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Opay Digital Services Limited, Elizabeth Wang, said the company’s support for education was part of its long-term corporate social responsibility initiatives aimed at youth empowerment.

According to her, Opay will continue to invest in educational partnerships and offer internship opportunities to LASU students as part of its commitment to national development.

The statement added, “Reinforcing this commitment, Wang announced that Opay would sponsor twenty (20) students annually for the next ten (10) years, helping them to pursue their academic and professional aspirations.

“She also revealed that the company, which currently employs over 5,000 staff, plans to provide internship and employment opportunities for LASU students as part of the collaboration.”

Wang explained that the scheme, which began in 2018, reflects Opay’s goal of advancing financial inclusion and social impact through technology.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Prof. Olatunji-Bello and Wang, alongside other university officials including the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu; Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Professors Oseni Afisi and Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin; and the Directors of LASU-SDG and LASUDA, Professors Tayo Ajayi and Rafiu Okuneye.
