Rewards ready for Falcons, D’Tigress collection – NSC

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has confirmed that the rewards of houses, national honours and cash awards of Naira equivalent of $100,000, awarded by President Bola Tinubu to the Super Falcons and the D’Tigress, have been processed and are ready for collection.

Dikko confirmed this on Monday in Fez, Morocco, while presenting the Super Eagles’ certificates for national honours and title documents to housing allocations in either Abuja or Lagos and land grants in Abuja for winning silver at the 2023 AFCON.

The fulfillment of the Super Eagles’ rewards comes almost two years after the tournament, which was held between January and February 2024, but the fate of the Super Falcons and D’Tigress could be different.

“Furthermore, the NSC chairman confirmed that the rewards of houses, national honours and cash awards of naira equivalent of of $100,000, awarded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR to the Super Falcons and the D’Tigers have been processed with the title documents to the houses and national honours certificates available for collection while the office of the Minister of Finance and Accountant General of the Federation are concluding the cash payments directly to the players accounts,” the NSC said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Super Falcons players and officials were rewarded with houses and $100,000 each for winning a 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco earlier this year.

Similarly, the D’Tigress and their backroom staff were honoured for winning a fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title in August.

Dikko was joined in Morocco to present the documents to the Super Eagles by Senate Committee chairman on Sports Senator Abdul Ningi, House Committee Chairman on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu, CG of Customs Bashir Adewale, NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, SSA to the President, Mrs Nathan-Mash, Nigeria High Embassy officials, Mallam Saleh Amadu, among other dignitaries.

While all the Super Eagles players received MON national honours, retired captain Ahmed Musa and Victor Osimhen were awarded OON honours, on account of having MON earlier, while William Troost-Ekong, who also retired recently, was awarded MFR for being named as player of the tournament at the last AFCON.

Led by Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, the Super Eagles finished second at the 2023 AFCON, which was played between January to February 2024, losing 2-1 against the hosts in the final.

Now under Franco-Malian coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles are in Morocco with the charge to win a fourth AFCON title.

The team recently missed out on the 2026 World Cup, which will be played in the USA, Canada and Mexico, after failing in the qualifying series and the African play-off.

In search of their fourth title on the continent, the three-time African champions are in Group C.

After facing Tanzania on Tuesday, they will battle Tunisia in their second group game on Saturday before facing Uganda next Tuesday.

The Super Eagles won the AFCON in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
