Tinubu Hails Northwest Stability at Argungu as Dozens Feared Dead in Niger State Bandit Attacks

    Manny Ita  –

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday declared that the successful staging of the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival demonstrates a “return of stability” to Nigeria’s troubled Northwest, even as fresh reports of deadly bandit attacks in parts of Niger State cast a shadow over the security outlook in the broader region. Speaking at the historic festival in Argungu, the president praised security agencies and local communities for enabling the large gathering to proceed without major incident.
He described the revival and smooth conduct of the event—once suspended for years due to insecurity—as symbolic of progress in restoring peace. “The fact that we can gather here in such large numbers to celebrate our culture is a testament to the return of stability in the Northwest,” Tinubu said, adding that his administration remains committed to sustaining security gains and promoting tourism, agriculture and economic development across the region.
However, security sources and local officials reported that armed bandits carried out coordinated attacks over the weekend in parts of Niger State, particularly in Borgu Local Government Area, leaving dozens feared dead and several communities displaced. Residents said gunmen on motorcycles stormed multiple villages, firing indiscriminately, looting homes and setting properties ablaze before fleeing into nearby forests. Casualty figures remain unconfirmed as rescue operations continue and access to some affected areas is limited.
Local authorities said security forces have been deployed to the area, while efforts are underway to account for missing persons and provide emergency assistance to survivors. A community leader described the assault as devastating. “We lost many people, and several families have fled into the bush for safety,” he said, appealing for sustained military presence to prevent further attacks.
Niger State has experienced repeated violence linked to armed groups operating across the vast forests that straddle the North-Central and Northwest regions, complicating security operations due to difficult terrain and porous boundaries with neighboring states. Analysts note that while some areas have recorded improvements, attacks continue to occur sporadically, underscoring the uneven nature of security gains.
Humanitarian workers warned that renewed violence could worsen displacement and food insecurity in rural communities already struggling with poverty and limited access to services. They called for stronger intelligence gathering, community protection measures and long-term development initiatives to address the root causes of banditry.
As investigations into the latest attacks continue, the contrast between the celebratory atmosphere at the Argungu festival and the reports of bloodshed in Niger State highlights the fragile security situation across northern Nigeria, where progress in some locations coexists with persistent threats in others. Officials say restoring lasting peace will require sustained military pressure on armed groups alongside socioeconomic interventions aimed at reducing recruitment into criminal networks.
