José Mourinho, the manager of Benfica, was visibly emotional just moments before kick-off in the Liga Portugal match against Vitória de Guimarães, breaking down in tears during a minute’s silence held in memory of Silvino Louro, the late Portuguese goalkeeper and long-time member of Mourinho’s coaching staff. Louro, who passed away at the age of 67 following a prolonged illness, had been a key figure in Mourinho’s teams over nearly two decades, including spells at Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, and Manchester United.
The entire Estádio da Luz observed the tribute, with fans and players reflecting on Louro’s legacy as a top-class goalkeeper who had represented Portugal in 23 international matches and amassed over 400 appearances in the domestic top flight. Mourinho, overwhelmed by grief, was captured on video with reddened eyes as he watched a photo of Louro displayed on the stadium’s big screen. Returning to the dugout, he struggled to compose himself, wiping away tears while preparing for the match.
Speaking to the Portuguese media after the game, Mourinho reflected on his bond with Louro: “My wife told me yesterday that it was hard to believe he was gone, and it still is. He’s gone, but the memories remain. It’s still time to mourn him, but I hope there are still many years ahead for me and many of his friends from Setúbal to laugh and cry together again. We spent 18 years together; that means so many memories. Living with him meant laughing a lot; he was one of those people it was easy to fall in love with. He was at home with my wife, my daughter, and my son, but now it’s about looking after those left behind. His children are part of our lives; they grew up with us and we must try to give them strength at this time. Before the match, after not being able to attend his funeral, seeing him on the screen was very hard, but I will always remember his words: before every match he would always say to me, ‘Brother, everything will be fine today.’”
Earlier, Mourinho had also posted a personal tribute on social media, writing: “I’m crying now, but I’ll manage to laugh, to laugh a lot, to talk about you, to remember every moment. In the Mourinho family, you are loved and you will live on. I’ll keep listening to you before every match: ‘brother, everything will be alright.’ Rest in peace, little brother.”
Silvino Louro’s career spanned several prominent Portuguese clubs, including Vitória Setúbal, Vitória de Guimarães, Benfica, Porto, and Salgueiros. Known for his consistency and leadership on the field, Louro transitioned into coaching after retirement in 2000, leaving a lasting legacy through his mentorship of goalkeepers across Europe alongside Mourinho.
