Nigeria’s Federal Government has escalated its fight against terrorism financing with the release of a list identifying 48 individuals and 12 corporate entities allegedly linked to funding extremist activities across the country. The disclosure marks one of the most significant transparency moves in recent years in the nation’s counter-terrorism campaign.
According to officials, the list was compiled through coordinated intelligence efforts involving financial regulators, security agencies, and international partners. The suspects are believed to have provided financial support—directly or indirectly—to groups responsible for insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violent extremism.
Security analysts say the publication of the names signals a shift toward a more aggressive “name-and-shame” strategy aimed at disrupting financial networks that sustain terror operations. However, the move has also triggered widespread public pressure for immediate and visible action.
Experts are urging authorities to go beyond disclosure by swiftly freezing bank accounts, seizing assets, and initiating arrests and prosecutions where evidence permits. They warn that failure to act decisively could undermine public confidence and allow suspects time to move or conceal funds.
The government has assured Nigerians that due process will be followed, noting that investigations are ongoing and that enforcement actions will be carried out in line with the law. Financial institutions have also been placed on high alert, with directives to flag suspicious transactions and cooperate fully with authorities.
This development comes amid intensified efforts to align Nigeria’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing frameworks with global standards, as the country seeks to strengthen its security architecture and international credibility.
As scrutiny intensifies, the coming days are expected to test the government’s resolve in translating intelligence into concrete enforcement actions.
