Nasarawa University in Nigeria has conferred an honorary doctorate degree on Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan in recognition of her leadership record, governance reforms, and contributions to regional diplomacy and development in Africa.
The award ceremony was conducted online on April 11, 2026, with President Samia participating virtually from Tanzania. University officials stated that the honour reflects her influence in promoting political stability, strengthening institutions, and advancing socio-economic reforms in her country.
According to the university, the decision also considered her efforts in expanding women’s representation in leadership and governance, as well as her role in enhancing international cooperation across African states. The institution described her leadership as “transformative” and aligned with broader continental development goals.
Nasarawa University, located in central Nigeria, noted that the honorary degree is part of its tradition of recognising African leaders and global figures who have contributed to education, public service, and development-oriented governance.
President Samia has, since assuming office in 2021, been widely recognised within diplomatic and policy circles for her emphasis on economic reforms, investment promotion, and regional integration efforts within the East African Community and broader African diplomatic engagements.
The university added that her recognition underscores growing academic and diplomatic linkages between African countries, particularly between West and East African institutions seeking to strengthen cooperation in education, governance, and development policy exchange.
The award adds to a series of international recognitions received by President Samia from academic institutions and organisations acknowledging her role in public service and leadership advancement on the continent.
