Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced a new housing development partnership aimed at addressing the growing urban housing deficit in Rivers State.
The initiative is part of the state government’s broader strategy to expand access to affordable housing, particularly for low- and middle-income residents who have been priced out of the property market due to rising costs and rapid urbanization. The partnership is expected to involve private sector developers, financial institutions, and housing agencies working collaboratively to deliver large-scale residential projects.
According to the governor, the plan will not only increase the supply of housing units but also stimulate economic activity through job creation in construction and related sectors. He emphasized the importance of adopting modern building techniques and sustainable urban planning to ensure long-term value and livability.
Fubara also noted that the government will focus on improving infrastructure in newly developed areas, including roads, water supply, and electricity, to support the housing projects and prevent the emergence of poorly serviced settlements.
The move comes amid increasing pressure on urban centers in Rivers State, especially in Port Harcourt, where population growth has significantly outpaced housing development, leading to overcrowding and higher rental costs.
Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative but stress that its success will depend on transparent implementation, affordability, and effective regulation to ensure that the housing units reach the intended beneficiaries.
