Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has reportedly defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as he positions himself for the 2027 governorship race in Enugu State.
The move, described as quiet and largely unannounced, comes despite an ongoing investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over allegations that he forged his academic and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates.
Although Nnaji has not publicly declared his defection, PDP officials have confirmed his membership, noting that he has recently been engaging with party stakeholders and holding political meetings within Enugu State. His spokesperson has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the development.
Sources indicate that the former minister has begun mobilising support through grassroots structures, including the inauguration of a political support group aimed at boosting his governorship ambition. He has also signaled his intention to run on a single-term agenda if elected in 2027, promising to deliver impactful governance within four years.
Nnaji previously contested the 2023 governorship election under the APC but was unsuccessful. His political standing within the party weakened following his resignation as minister in October 2023, shortly after allegations of certificate forgery surfaced.
Investigations cited in reports claim that officials from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and NYSC authorities disputed the authenticity of the certificates he submitted during his ministerial screening. The ICPC has since been probing the matter, with the possibility of prosecution if the allegations are substantiated.
Despite the controversy, Nnaji appears determined to remain politically active, seeking a fresh platform in the PDP as he prepares for another gubernatorial bid in Enugu State.
