President of Senegal, Faye, Becomes New ECOWAS Chairman

New Chairman of ECOWAS, Bassirou Diomaye Faye

Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeding Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio.

Faye was elected on Sunday during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where regional leaders gathered to deliberate on pressing political, security and economic issues confronting West Africa. Blueprint reports

The 46-year-old Senegalese leader assumes the rotating chairmanship at a critical period for the regional bloc, which is grappling with insecurity, democratic challenges and strained relations with three member states that recently exited the organisation.

Faye takes over from President Bio, who assumed the ECOWAS chairmanship in June 2025 after succeeding Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Tinubu had completed his two consecutive terms as chairman of the regional bloc before handing over to the Sierra Leonean leader during the 67th Ordinary Session held in Abuja.

With the transition completed, Faye is now expected to steer the affairs of the 15-member regional organisation over the coming year while addressing some of the most significant challenges facing the sub-region.

The new ECOWAS chairman assumes office amid growing security concerns across West Africa, where terrorism, violent extremism, military coups and political instability continue to threaten peace and regional integration.

One of the immediate issues expected to dominate Faye’s tenure is the continued diplomatic engagement with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, which withdrew from ECOWAS following disagreements over sanctions and the bloc’s response to military takeovers in the three countries.

Regional leaders are hopeful that the Senegalese president will intensify dialogue aimed at rebuilding confidence and reopening communication channels with the breakaway states in an effort to preserve regional cooperation.

Analysts believe restoring unity within ECOWAS will remain one of the defining tasks of his administration.

At 46, Faye becomes one of the youngest leaders to chair the regional organisation, a development many observers believe could inject fresh energy into ECOWAS.

His emergence has raised expectations for renewed efforts towards institutional reforms, democratic governance, accountability, youth inclusion and economic integration across member states.

Political analysts say his leadership style and reform agenda in Senegal have positioned him as one of Africa’s emerging leaders, with many expecting him to champion initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting sustainable development within the sub-region.

His election also places Senegal at the centre of major diplomatic engagements and strategic policy decisions affecting West Africa.

The summit also witnessed changes in the leadership of the ECOWAS Commission, with Biram Diop appointed as the new President of the Commission.

Diop succeeds Dr Omar Alieu Touray, whose tenure came to an end after overseeing the Commission during one of the organisation’s most challenging periods.

The appointment is expected to complement Faye’s leadership as both officials work together to implement ECOWAS policies, strengthen regional institutions and promote economic cooperation among member states.

The Freetown summit brought together presidents and heads of government from across West Africa to review the state of regional integration and discuss strategies for tackling common challenges.

Top on the agenda were security cooperation, economic growth, constitutional order, democratic governance, trade facilitation and humanitarian concerns arising from conflicts in parts of the region.

The leaders reiterated their commitment to promoting peace, stability and sustainable development despite the political and security difficulties confronting several member states.

With insecurity continuing to spread across parts of the Sahel and democratic governance facing increasing pressure, expectations are high that Faye’s leadership will provide fresh direction for ECOWAS.

Observers believe his ability to foster dialogue among member states, rebuild confidence within the regional bloc and strengthen cooperation on security and economic development will largely define his tenure.

His emergence comes at a time when ECOWAS is seeking to reaffirm its relevance as West Africa’s foremost regional organisation and restore confidence in its role as a promoter of democracy, peace and regional integration.

As the new chairman assumes office, attention will now focus on how he navigates the complex political landscape, addresses growing security threats and advances the collective aspirations of the people of West Africa.
