The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against a fake publication circulating online and purportedly presenting a special announcement on governorship candidates for the 2027 elections in six states.
The electoral body said the publication, which concerns Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano states, did not originate from the Commission.
In a post on its X handle, INEC described the document as “fraudulent” and urged the public not to circulate it.
“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC. INEC therefore urges members of the public to disregard the fraudulent publication and refrain from sharing it,” the Commission stated.
It further clarified that claims suggesting it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states were false.
INEC advised Nigerians to verify electoral information through its official communication platforms, including its website, verified social media accounts and news portal, rather than relying on unverified publications.
The Commission also provided its contact details for enquiries and further clarification, including its call centre.
INEC reiterated its commitment to providing accurate electoral information and urged the public to remain vigilant against misleading publications.
The warning comes days after the Commission released the final list of candidates for the 2027 governorship elections, which are scheduled for next year. The list has reportedly stirred controversy in several states following the omission of some candidates’ names.
