The result leaves Nigeria third in Group F with one point, while China move to four points in second place. Group leaders Spain, who have six points, have already secured their passage to the second round.
For the Falconets, the draw provides a lifeline after their opening defeat to Spain and means their campaign will go down to the final group fixture against New Caledonia.
Nigeria must now produce a strong performance against New Caledonia and hope other results work in their favour if they are to secure one of the available knockout-stage places.
The Falconets entered the China clash under pressure following their opening setback and knew another defeat would almost certainly end their hopes of progressing.
They responded with a disciplined defensive display, keeping a clean sheet against a Chinese side who had entered the match in a stronger position after collecting three points from their opening fixture.
However, Nigeria’s failure to score means they remain in a precarious position heading into the final round of group matches.
Spain’s six-point haul has already guaranteed the European side a place in the knockout phase, while China’s four points put them in a commanding position for the other qualification spot.
Nigeria, on one point, therefore face a must-win situation against New Caledonia, with qualification potentially depending on the outcome of the China-Spain encounter.
The Falconets will need to improve their attacking efficiency after failing to find the net in their first two matches of the tournament.
The goalless draw nevertheless gives Nigeria a chance to rescue their campaign. Victory over New Caledonia would move them to four points and could put them in contention for second place, depending on how China fare against Spain.
With their fate still hanging in the balance, the Falconets must now turn their attention to New Caledonia knowing that nothing less than a convincing victory may be enough to keep their U-20 World Cup dream alive.
