Meta begins in-stream ads as monetisation move thickens in Nigeria

Meta begins in-stream ads as monetisation move thickens in Nigeria

Meta has begun in-stream advertisements for creators on its platforms in Nigeria.

In-stream ads allow creators to run advertisements in their new or existing videos, including live content. Meta automatically identifies natural breaks in videos to place ads or will enable creators to choose their placements. According to the tech giant’s website, earnings depend on advertisers and the number of video views.

In-stream and live ads include pre-roll ads, which play before the video; mid-roll ads, which break into the video; and image ads, which are static ads that appear below the video. Creators must meet certain eligibility requirements, such as having a minimum of 5,000 followers, for in-stream ads.

Additionally, after-roll ads may play following the video content. Other monetisation channels include ads on reels, bonuses, and subscriptions.

According to a report by NapoloenCat, there are over 50 million Facebook users in Nigeria. Following the approved feature, content creators in Nigeria can now monetise their content and earn from Facebook through in-stream ads and live ads. Experts project that these adverts will bring about monetisation for creators as those with addresses in Nigeria had previously been disenfranchised from the monetisation, except if they were operating from an eligible country.

Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, announced that the feature would go live in June during a visit to Nigeria in March.

“Monetisation won’t be limited to just Instagram. Nigerian creators eligible to use our monetisation products will be able to also monetise on Facebook as well,” he said.

Confirming the development, Meta announced in a statement on Monday the availability of two new monetisation features for eligible creators in Ghana and Nigeria: in-stream ads on Facebook and Facebook ads on reels. It said these features will enable creators to earn money to craft original videos and cultivate a community.

Moon Baz, Global Partnerships Lead, Africa, Middle East and Turkey (AMET) at Meta, said, “Every day, we’re inspired by the incredible African creators who use Facebook to tell their stories, connect with others and bring people together.

“This expansion will empower eligible creators in the vibrant creative industry across Nigeria and Ghana to earn money, whilst setting the bar high for creativity across the world and making Meta’s family of apps the one-stop-shop for all creators.”

Meta explained that in-stream ads can play before, during or after on-demand videos, whether it is pre-recorded content or when publishing a recording of a previous live stream. It stated that types of in-stream ads include pre-roll ads (which play before a video starts), mid-roll ads (which play during videos), image Ads (static image ads that display beneath the content) and post-roll ads (ads which appear at the end of videos).

“Ads on Facebook Reels integrate seamlessly into original Reels, enabling creators to get paid based on the performance of their original reels while entertaining fans,” it added.

Uber has introduced a new hotel booking feature within its app as part of its strategy to evolve into a comprehensive “everything app.” The service, developed in partnership with Expedia, allows users to search and reserve hotel rooms from a selection of more than 700,000 properties. The feature integrates travel tools such as maps, filters, and pricing options, while enabling payments through saved card details already stored in the Uber platform. According to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the company is expanding beyond ride-hailing and food delivery to become a unified platform for a wide range of everyday services. Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said the collaboration is aimed at simplifying travel planning and reducing the steps required to complete bookings. Uber also plans to extend the partnership to include short-term rental listings through Vrbo in the future. The move reflects a broader global trend toward multifunctional apps that combine services like transport, shopping, and payments in a single ecosystem, similar to platforms such as WeChat and Alipay in China. Other tech companies are also pursuing similar “super app” models, including Airbnb, which has added experiences and personal services, and X, which is exploring financial services integration. Uber further revealed plans to incorporate AI-powered tools, including meal planning, shopping list creation, delivery coordination, and a voice assistant for navigating the app.
