Varsity Degree, Not Yardstick To Success As Nigerian Entrepreneurs Stand As Proof

    Femi Otedola

The path to success does not necessarily depend on following the conventional means of formal education.

Nigeria have witnessed several self-made entrepreneurs who have reset the popular notion that you can only make it through the walls of schools.

These entrepreneurs have not just built thriving companies without a university degree; they have grown to become employers of degree holders without getting a formal education themselves. See our list of Nigerian Entrepreneurs Who Became Billionaires Without A University Degree:

    1. Dr. Cosmas Maduka – Coscharis Group:

Maduka is a popular Nigerian entrepreneur and founder of the Coscharis Group, a brand that specializes in automobile distribution, manufacturing, and trading.

Without a university certificate, Cosmas leveraged hard work, strategic partnerships and discipline to build one of the country’s most successful business empires yet.

    2. Dr. Cletus Madubugwu Ibeto – The Ibeto Group:

The chairman of The Ibeto group transformed a struggling trading business into a diversified industrial conglomerate that specializes in cement, petrochemicals, and logistics.

His knowledge of the Nigerian market has gone a long way towards helping him to grow his business into the industrial giant it is today.

    3. Mohammed Indimi – Oriental Energy Resources:

Indimi is a self-made oil magnate who started out as a small trader. He navigated the country’s complicated oil industry to build a profitable empire, earning the respect of his peers for being a strategic investor.

His resilience in one of Nigeria’s most competitive sectors yielded good results in the end.

    4. Vincent Obianodo – Founder, Juhel Nigeria Limited:

While others were busy sitting for exams and chasing a university degree, Vincent was struggling to build his wealth via investments in construction and infrastructure.

Popular for his discipline and sharp business brain, Obianodo’s success is proof that school is not always the answer to poverty.

    5. Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma – Innoson Group:

Innocent deserves praise for revolutionising the Nigerian automotive industry.

After engaging in small-scale trading for many years, Chukwuma currently runs Africa’s first indigenous car manufacturing company, proving that innovation and dedication can open doors without formal education.

    6. Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija – Famfa Oil:

Alakija is a prominent female entrepreneur in Nigeria.

Her company, Famfa Oil, is a major player in the country’s oil sector that has leveraged strategic collaborations and brave investments over the years.

    7. Ladi Delano – Founder, Rencap Securities:

Ladi is making her mark in Nigeria’s financial services with Rencap Securities.

Her knowledge of the financial market and risk management is proof that there is more to life and success than a university degree.

    8. Sir Tony Ezenna – Orange Drugs:

Tony is the brain behind Orange Drugs, one of Nigeria’s leading pharmaceutical distribution companies.

His entrepreneurial vision and business skills have gone a long way towards propelling the company to financial greatness, further proving that practical knowledge can be more effective than certificates if channelled correctly.

    9. Rasaq Okoya – Eleganza Group:

Rasaq’s Eleganza group is currently a force to be reckoned with in Nigeria’s manufacturing and real estate sectors.

His disciplined lifestyle, incredible work ethic and valuable knowledge of consumer needs have played a major role in the establishment of his business empire that has spanned several industries across the nation.

    10. Femi Otedola – Zenon Petroleum/Geregu Power Plc:

A household name and a popular energy entrepreneur, he has grown his wealth via strategic investments in petroleum and power.

Despite not having a uni degree, this business genius has a success story that emphasises how a financial breakthrough is inevitable when business-minded people identify market opportunities, leverage networks, and take brave business decisions.
