Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for the urgent preservation and restoration of key Egba heritage sites as preparations intensify for the 2026 Lisabi Festival scheduled to hold next month in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Obasanjo made the appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting with traditional rulers, historians and cultural custodians, where he stressed that historic landmarks such as the iconic Iwe Irohin house must be protected from neglect and structural decay. He warned that allowing such monuments to deteriorate would amount to erasing vital chapters of Yoruba and Nigerian history.
“Iwe Irohin is not just a building; it represents the beginning of journalism in Nigeria and a symbol of intellectual awakening among our people,” Obasanjo said. “If we fail to preserve it and other heritage sites, we are failing future generations who deserve to know where they come from.”
The former president noted that the Lisabi Festival, which commemorates the legendary Egba warrior Lisabi Agbongbo Akala and celebrates Egba unity and resilience, offers an opportunity to showcase the rich cultural legacy of the Egba people to the world. He, however, expressed concern that some historical structures in Abeokuta are in need of urgent attention.
“Our cultural heritage is our identity,” he said. “As we prepare to welcome visitors from across Nigeria and the diaspora, we must ensure that the monuments that tell our story are standing strong and well maintained.”
Obasanjo urged the Ogun State Government, private investors and Egba sons and daughters at home and abroad to collaborate in funding restoration efforts. He emphasized that cultural preservation should not be left solely to government institutions but should be embraced as a collective responsibility.
“This is not about politics; it is about posterity,” he stated. “When tourists come for the Lisabi Festival, they should see living history, not abandoned relics.”
Cultural leaders present at the meeting echoed the former president’s concerns, noting that increased attention to heritage conservation could also boost tourism and local economic development. They pledged support for initiatives aimed at rehabilitating historic sites before the commencement of the festival.
The 2026 Lisabi Festival is expected to feature traditional rites, cultural displays, processions and lectures highlighting Egba history, drawing dignitaries and cultural enthusiasts from within and outside Nigeria.
