Electricity distribution companies in Nigeria generated a total of ₦207 billion in revenue in December, according to new data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), highlighting the scale of earnings in the power distribution segment despite persistent supply challenges.
The regulator disclosed the figures in its latest industry data, indicating that the revenue was collected across the country’s electricity distribution companies, commonly referred to as DisCos, which are responsible for distributing power to end users.
The development comes as some communities in Lagos served by Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) prepare for a scheduled power outage expected to take place on March 14.
Industry officials said the planned outage forms part of routine maintenance and system upgrades aimed at improving the reliability of electricity supply in affected areas.
A notice issued by the distribution company to customers in parts of Lagos explained that the temporary disruption was necessary to allow engineers carry out technical work on sections of the network.
“The planned outage is necessary to enable our technical team carry out essential maintenance and upgrade works on the network,” the company said in the notice.
The firm also urged residents and businesses in the affected communities to make necessary arrangements ahead of the scheduled interruption.
“We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the understanding and cooperation of our valued customers as we work to improve electricity supply,” the statement added.
Electricity distribution companies have continued to face scrutiny over service delivery, billing practices, and infrastructure challenges since the privatisation of the power sector.
Regulators and power sector analysts say periodic maintenance and system upgrades remain critical to improving network stability, even as stakeholders push for greater investment in infrastructure to reduce outages and enhance electricity supply across the country.
