Tyla beats Burna Boy, Asake, others, wins best Afrobeats song, artist

South African singer Tyla has emerged as the Top Afrobeats Artist at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, beating Nigerian heavyweights like Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Asake.

The awards ceremony, broadcast on Thursday night, saw Tyla make history with double wins. She also claimed the Top Afrobeats Song title for her global hit, Water.

Tyla, born in Johannesburg, was nominated in eight categories at this year’s BBMAs. These included Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Female Artist, Top R&B Album (Truth or Dare), and Top R&B Song (Water). She also secured nods for Top Afrobeats Song with tracks like Truth or Dare and Jump, a collaboration with Gunna and Skillibeng.

Taking to the stage, the star was emotional yet joyful as she thanked fans and supporters.

“I must give a whole speech,” she began, pausing to gather her thoughts.

“Yo, guys. I don’t even know this is all happening. Yo, guys. You’re bad, also you’re um, thank you. Thank you, everybody here. You guys killed it. You guys gave me energy. Thank you guys so much.

“Thank you to Billboard. Thank you to my label, Epic Records. Thank you, Sylvia. Thank you, my Tygas. Thank you, my family. Thank you, God. Thank you, everyone. Thank you, my friends and my loved ones. Thank you, Africa.”

Tyla’s rise to international fame has been fueled by her chart-topping single, *Water*, which has gained widespread acclaim and dominated music charts globally.
