    Kunle Afolayan partners Benin Republic

A bold new chapter in African cinema has commenced as Kunle Afolayan’s KAP Film & Television Academy and SOPA (Société de Productions Audiovisuelles S.A.), an agency of the Government of the Republic of Benin, officially unveiled the KAP-SOPA Pan-African Filmmaking Bootcamp.

The landmark initiative is aimed at nurturing a new generation of African filmmakers equipped to compete and collaborate on the global stage.

The announcement was made in Cotonou, where both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to transforming Africa’s creative economy through strategic investment in youth, skills development and authentic African storytelling.

The fully sponsored 12-week intensive filmmaking programme will provide twenty carefully selected young creatives from the Republic of Benin with immersive, industry-led training designed to prepare them for professional careers across the film and audiovisual value chain.

The bootcamp represents the first major implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier this year between KAP Film & Television Academy and SOPA, establishing a strategic partnership between one of Africa’s foremost film training institutions and the Government of the Republic of Benin to accelerate capacity development within the country’s creative sector.

Anchored on the theme ‘Owning the Narrative,’ the programme reflects a shared vision to empower African storytellers to tell authentic stories from an African perspective while equipping them with the technical expertise, creative confidence and professional exposure required to succeed within the rapidly expanding global film industry.

Participants will undergo a unique cross-border learning experience spanning three locations, beginning with four weeks of foundational training in the Republic of Benin, followed by one week of industry exposure at the Academy’s hub in Lagos, Nigeria, before completing an intensive seven-week practical residency at the renowned KAP Film Village and Resort. There, they will work alongside accomplished filmmakers and industry professionals on real productions in an environment that mirrors the realities of professional filmmaking.

The initiative also reflects the Republic of Benin’s growing commitment to positioning the creative and cultural industries as strategic drivers of youth employment, economic diversification and international cultural influence.

Speaking during the launch, Kunle Afolayan, Founder of KAP Film & Television Academy, described the programme as an investment in Africa’s creative future.

“Africa is rich in talent and stories. Our responsibility is to create opportunities for young creatives to own the narrative, collaborate across borders and tell authentic stories that the world cannot ignore.

This programme is an investment in the future of African storytelling.”

Recognised as one of Africa’s most respected filmmakers and creative entrepreneurs, Afolayan noted that the Academy’s training philosophy combines classroom instruction with practical industry immersion, enabling participants to learn directly from accomplished practitioners actively shaping Africa’s film landscape.

In the same vein, Abedje Sinatou, Managing Director of SOPA, reiterated the Government of the Republic of Benin’s determination to build a globally competitive creative workforce.

“We are convinced that this strategic partnership with KAP Film & Television Academy will significantly advance the government’s objective of equipping our young people with the skills required to excel in cinema and the audiovisual arts. Through this collaboration, we are laying the foundation for a stronger creative industry capable of competing confidently on the international stage.”

Welcoming the inaugural cohort, Seun Soyinka, Academy Director of KAP Film & Television Academy, encouraged participants to maximise the rare opportunity before them.

“You are pioneers in what promises to become a defining platform for creative collaboration across Africa. Immerse yourselves in every experience, learn from some of the finest professionals on the continent and embrace the responsibility of becoming storytellers whose work will shape how Africa is seen by the world.”

Beyond technical excellence, the KAP–SOPA Pan-African Filmmaking Bootcamp seeks to foster regional collaboration, strengthen cultural exchange and cultivate a new generation of filmmakers capable of telling compelling African stories with authenticity, creativity and global relevance.
