    Doyen Of Accounting, Akintola Williams: A Pioneer’s Legacy

    Pa Akintola Williams, the doyen of accounting in Nigeria, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the remarkable age of 104 in the early hours of Monday, September 11, 2023.

    The Early Years

    Born in 1919, Akintola Williams was destined for greatness.

    His journey to becoming Nigeria’s first indigenous chartered accountant began with a strong foundation in accounting.

    He pursued his passion at the University of London, where he honed his skills and knowledge.

    It was during this time that he set his sights on becoming a chartered accountant.

    Pioneering Nigeria’s Accounting Profession

    In 1947, Akintola Williams achieved his dream by becoming a chartered accountant.

    He returned to Nigeria armed with the expertise he had gained and a vision for the future. In 1952, he founded his own accounting firm, Akintola Williams & Co., which later became Deloitte & Touche.

    This establishment marked a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s financial history, as it provided essential services for businesses and played a crucial role in shaping the nation’s economy.

    A Champion of Progress

    Akintola Williams was not content with personal success alone. He was a staunch advocate for the development of the accounting profession in Nigeria.

    As a founding member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), he helped lay the foundation for the growth and recognition of accountancy in the country.

    His leadership as ICAN’s president from 1963 to 1965 was instrumental in fostering a sense of professionalism and ethics within the profession.

    Additionally, he served as a member of the National Board of Accountants and Auditors, further contributing to the regulatory framework of the field.

    A Legacy of Recognition

    Throughout his illustrious career, Pa Akintola Williams received numerous awards and honors.

    These accolades celebrated his outstanding contributions to the nation and the accounting profession.

    Notable among these recognitions are the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM), both of which underscored his exceptional achievements and commitment to excellence.

    He was also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, a testament to his global impact in the field of accounting.
